Over the bank holiday weekend, I was lucky enough to be able to get away to the west coast of Ireland where I spent a fantastic few days with some friends just driving around and taking in the spectacular scenery. Inevitably, I took a LOT of photos! I’m still trawling through them, which seems to be taking 10 times as long as normal due to the amount of work that Uni is taking up! However, here are a couple of photos from the Cliffs of Moher for starters!

I have spent most of today working on a presentation for Wednesday but I couldn’t help taking a few minutes out of the day to play with my new lens! I haven’t taken too many photos yet but, so far, I am really happy.

Unfortunately, I also had a brief trawl through Flickr and after coming across some of my friends photos, I decided to have a bit of a play with the Orton Effect. Obviously I am still fiddling with it and haven’t got the technique quite right, but here is one of the first tries. First the original composition and then the “Orton-ised” copy!

Its about time for a bit of a change around…I get bored so quickly! Vivid purple is the name of the game - I really wanted to try and tie the blog in a little bit better with the colour scheme of the website and I think it works well.
The site has also been sqashed full of more pics…especially in the music gallery.

Oh and keep an eye out for some more photos (and even a new gallery perhaps) as I have finally gotten around to purchasing a new lens! After having a look around for a 85mm, f1.8 lens, it was suggested to me that perhaps I should look at the 50mm, f1.8. At almost a quarter of the price it seemed like too good a lens to overlook and so after a couple of days of pondering…I took the plunge and bought it!
Its a bit of an impulse buy to be honest but after having a bit of a play with it, I am really happy with the results in low light conditions which was the primary reason why I wanted it in the first place! I’m also really happy with the depth of field - something which I am sure I will have hours of fun experimenting with!

Looks as though I may have lined myself up a job taking photos of the Dublin mini-marathon. Its quite exciting as I’ve not done any “sports photography” as such so I will need to get practising!
I’ve not posted any photos in a while so here’s a photograph of the tree outside of my University building. We headed out to sit underneath it last week - the sun was deceptive though as it was still bitterly cold outside! Roll on the summer!

The Trinity University music magazine - Analogue, which I occassionally take photographs for, was successful last night in winning the Peoples Choice award at the Student Media Awards! Well done guys!

I was meant to be at the awards myself but, unfortunately, my research got in the way!

One of my photographs has appeared on page 2 of today’s Irish Times entertainment supplement, “The Ticket”! Exciting stuff!

My music gallery has been crammed for far too long so I decided it was time for a reshuffle. I have decided to just display a selection of my best pictures rather than have multiple photos of the same person or band who readers may not know or care about!
I’m still in the process of adding photos but the “coming soon” banner has now been lifted with around 25 photos up at the moment. So far there are pics of David Ford, Seth Lakeman, Devotchka and some photos from my BBC stint at Guilfest. Go take a look….more will be added soon.

I still have so many pictures from New Zealand but here are the last two…for a while anyway! So here, have a sunrise and a sunset.

This sunrise occurred on one of my last days. I woke up early to see off my Aunt and Uncle and this is the view that greeted me from the kitchen window! It was just begging to be photographed.

This sunset was one of the many which I took whilst at Lake Taupo. The duck floated by at just the right time and the starbursts where the sun hit the water just turned out perfectly!
For more photos from New Zealand then check out the landscapes gallery although there are other photos dotted about the website aswell.

Here are a couple more photos from my time in New Zealand. I was staying with my family who live in the Wairarapa… farm country! It was so peaceful with nothing but cows and hills as far as the eye could see! However, tucked away on the farms there was always something interesting to take photographs of.

This shed used to be used by my Aunt and Uncle as a chicken coop. Although they no longer have any chickens, the small building still stands out amongst the fields.

This is the tool shed in my cousin’s garden. The red door caught my eye to begin with but the white wooden boards were also really nicely contrasted by the red flowers providing a nice balance.

Blimey! Where has the time gone? Forgive my absence but I have been away in New Zealand! As a result, I have a huge backlog of photographs to get through. I’m doing my best to get through them and post them up on my website as soon as possible. Here’s a couple to get you started…it really is such a beautiful country that I really was spoilt photograph-wise and ended up bringing home more than 500 photos…and that was me being careful not to overdo it!

This photo was taken just outside the back door of my Aunt and Uncle’s house. The sun was just setting and due to the drought which they are currently stuck in the middle of, the grass had turned an amazing gold colour - not great for all of the dairy farmers but absolutely brilliant for photos!

This second picture is taken on the “Desert Road”, the highest highway in New Zealand. Consequently it is often very dry and again, the golden grasses made for a fantastic photo opportunity. The purple heather and blue haze over the volcanoes just made it even more perfect!
More soon!
